Four Levels of Service

Qualification for VIP Discounts

Getting in to ice skating, but don't know where to start? Our fitting consultation aims to match the most appropriate skate for each skater.

The Process

In order to provide a complete service, an appointment is necessary.

  • Contact Rich@TheRink stating what level of consultation you require (see below)
  • Arrange an appointment
  • Meet up!

Check Existing Fit

Bring your skates to the appointment, along with thin cotton or skating socks. We will check the fit of the skate for you and provide some general advice for any issues you may be experiencing

Measure and Advise

With or without your existing boots. We'll measure your feet and advise on what boots are likely to work for you, and what additional work may be required. *

Measure, Advise and Try

In addition to the above, we will bring skates for you to try (may require multiple appointments) without the need to purchase the skates beforehand. In some cases, particularly for high level skates, a non-refundable deposit may be required.

Gold Fitting**

We'll also:

  • Sharpen the skates and allow you to try them on the ice (skates with fitted blade only)
  • Give a discount on further adjustments required to get the boot just right - heat moulding, punching and blade placement, where appropriate.

Please note:

* Due to variances in skate manufacturing processes, a skate that should fit according to the manufacturers published recommendations may be too small or large. This is outside of the control of Rich@TheRink, and therefore our recommendation to try any skates you purchase before sharpening or any other work, which may void the ability to return the skates.

** Gold Fitting is not applicable to all types of skate sold, particularly those on lower level Learn to Skate, or skating recreationally.

Skates, Boots and Blades we stock

We aim our lines to skates designed for regular recreational skates, Learn to Skate and beyond.

Other stockists

In the unlikely event we're unable to provide you with suitable skates, you could also try Decathlon in the centre of Cambridge (for basic recreational skates), travelling to Sheffield, Birmingham or Southampton, or ordering online.

The disadvantage of fitting your own skates

If you're skating anything more than recreationally (and even heavy recreational users), you need to pay attention:

"They're just like shoes, aren't they?" Absolutely not! Skates are a specialist piece of equipment, and in most cases considered safety equipment. You can get away with ill-fitting shoes far more easily than ill-fitting skates. Problems caused by ill-fitting skates include:

  • Blisters
  • Stress and strain on your ankles, knees and hips
  • Potentially twisted joints
  • Bone spurs
  • Injury from falls preventable by having proper fitted skates

At a minimum you should speak to us about how to determine your skates are right for you.
